Understanding the different types of secure buildings is essential when deciding which solution is the best for your industry and operations to ensure you get the most out of your system. Potentially the most difficult to get your head around are SCIFs, which is why Workspace Technology is here to clear it up.
What is a SCIF?
A SCIF is a Sensitive Compartmented Information Facility used within the defence sector, particularly for military, intelligence parlance, national security and national defence operations. It refers to a secure enclosed area or room designed specifically to process
classified, sensitive compartmented information and material. SCIFs, can be used for a number of applications including secure meeting rooms, command & control facilities and data centres, meaning they are often designed in a modular or portable format.
They are created to prevent data leakage of sensitive information by the military, government and lawmakers, meaning a secure, impenetrable design is vital. By focusing on robust design and protection, they are able to deny access to any unauthorized personnel, eliminating any risk of compromised information.
SCIFs tend to vary in size and material, but the requirements usually remain the same. They need impenetrable structural features, including doors, hinges and locks, which all must adhere to stringent industry standards to ensure complete security. Design features are also put in place to ensure total visual and acoustic security as another measure to protect sensitive information. Even down to the ductwork and ventilation of a SCIF has to be specially designed to prevent any leakage of data or information. As part of the strict security requirements, highly sensitive alarm systems and access controls need to be in place to ensure that sensitive information isn't just protected from the inside but also from the outside.
